THE WINNER OF THE RAMÓN ROLDÁN COMPOSITION COMPETITION CHOSEN

Sergio Pastor González (Málaga, 1985) has won the I “Ramón Roldán” Composition Competition (2022), convened jointly by the Association of Composers and Performers of Malaga (ACIM) and the Iberian Sinfonietta orchestra, based in Fuengirola. The jury for the award was made up of the composer Ramón Roldán, the director and composer Silvia Olivero and the director Juan Paulo Gómez , who met at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga on Monday, May 16, unanimously agreed to award the prize to the work Dimensions of the young composer.

About the award

The winning work will be premiered by Iberian Sinfonietta in its next 2022/2023 season. This first edition of the competition aims to give greater visibility to young composers, who will have the opportunity to work with a professional and consolidated orchestra.

About the winner

Sergio González Pastor is from Malaga by birth and is currently 37 years old. He studies Trumpet at the “Manuel Carra” Professional Conservatory of Music in Malaga and is currently studying Composition at the Superior Conservatory of Music in Malaga.

About the Association of Composers and Performers of Malaga (ACIM)

The Association of Composers and Performers of Malaga (ACIM) was founded in 2002 by the Composition Department of the Superior Conservatory of Music of Malaga, due to the need to create a meeting space for composers and performers in the city. Non-profit since its foundation, its objectives are to encourage and promote avant-garde music, with special attention to Malaga creators. To this end, activities such as concerts, competitions, workshops and round tables are developed, as well as albums and sheet music books published. Among the numerous activities, the annual ACIM Festival stands out, with concerts that cover different creative and instrumental fields and with collaborations with other musical entities in the province, such as the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra and Iberian Sinfonietta , for the inclusion of works of authors of the association in the respective seasonal concerts. He also collaborates annually in the organization of the Contemporary Music Series of the Superior Conservatory of Music of Málaga.

About Iberian Sinfonietta

It is a philanthropic orchestral project formed by professional musicians that was born in 2019 on the Costa del Sol (Málaga) with an educational and cultural objective towards the community based, mainly, on the support and dissemination of Classical Music. The orchestra has its own bimonthly concert season called Community Concerts , which takes place between the months of September and May. Currently, the season takes place in the town of Fuengirola (Málaga), holding the concerts in the auditorium of the Peace Palace.

Supporting young talents and the different musical associations and entities on the current music scene is another of the fundamental objectives of Iberian Sinfonietta . Currently, they have a collaboration agreement with the Intercentros Melómano Contest through which the national winner of the Higher Grade category is annually awarded with a soloist concert within the Community Concerts of each season. Likewise, within the "Ciudad de Estepona" Young Performers Competition, the Special Prize "Iberian Sinfonietta" is awarded, also granting a solo concert to the best Andalusian performer during the final of the competition.

The interest in supporting and disseminating new musical creations is also a premise for this Malaga orchestra. Through the collaboration agreement with the Association of Composers and Performers of Malaga (ACIM) , Iberian Sinfonietta commits each season, on the one hand, to the premiere of a work by a new composer, who is the winner of the “Ramón Roldán” Composition Contest. , created in tribute to the man who was Professor of Composition at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Málaga for so many years. On the other hand, at the premiere of a work by a composer with a professional career and a member of this association.

The orchestra is directed by Juan Paulo Gómez , who is the founder, musical and artistic director of the group. Among his various artistic facets, it is worth highlighting that of a solidarity artist involved in numerous social projects to help a multitude of charitable organizations through Music. In addition, he is the musical and artistic director of the Provincial Youth Orchestra of Málaga and combines his artistic and charitable work with teaching, being a professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Málaga Superior Conservatory of Music.
