WE TALK WITH VÍCTOR MARTÍNEZ JARA, COMPOSER OF THE CONCERT FOR TWO TRUMPETS AND ORCHESTRA THAT WE WILL PREMIERE IN OUR NEXT CONCERT
Dear public,
The title of the next Iberian Sinfonietta concert will be “From another prism” . The meaning is how, from today, the music that is being created today can coexist with different influences and inspirations but, in some way, look to the past: to baroque forms, to previous concepts, etc.; that is, “from another prism.”
Our concert will begin with an ABSOLUTE PREMIERE , something always exciting for the audience, performers, and of course, for (in this case) the “ father of the creature ”, the composer.
Víctor Martínez Jara (1995 ) is one of the most promising current Spanish composers. His view is based on a vast technical mastery and concepts that appear in his work as the influence of the legacy of baroque music . We will be able to verify all this next Saturday, March 13, while we will learn a little more about it through our interview:
Víctor, in your concerto for two trumpets, there is a great relationship with classical forms although you contribute another point of view. How did the inspiration for this work arise?
This concert was born in 2013 as a project to practice the “concerto grosso” genre, while I was studying composition at the Professional Conservatory of Astorga, my hometown. From the beginning it was a very special work for me, since the genre captivated me and it was going to be performed by two friends of mine as soloists along with the conservatory's string orchestra. The concert is very inspired by Vivaldi's concertos with some personal touches and romantic and neoclassical influences, although I tried to stick as much as I could to the established rules, given that, after all, the purpose of the work was originally academic.
The Concerto is demanding and you give each soloist a specific personality. What does your work convey? Where are you taking the listener?
My intention was for both soloists to have generally similar importance, creating a conversation where both parties understand each other instead of an argument, although it is true that on certain occasions the second trumpet functions as an echo or a second opinion, so to speak. what the first has presented.
At what point are you at a professional level?
Right now I am finishing my training as a clarinetist. Shortly after writing this concerto it was time to decide whether I was going to focus on the clarinet or on the composition and I chose to continue focusing on the instrument to return to the composition later.
From then on I began my Higher Degree at the Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca and finished it at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where I later completed a master's degree in performance. Right now I am studying a Graduate Certificate at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, which is currently on pause due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, I am using these months to prepare for competitions, orchestra tests, teach at a couple of schools in Oslo and carry out projects with my wind quintet, the CONSONANT Quintet.
Thank you very much, good luck in everything and in Oslo, where you live now, and you know, next March 13 we will premiere your work, in the warm Fuengirola.
